The 5th Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was released 10 years ago today! This was also the 5th film of Emma’s career, and it was followed by Ballet Shoes, her first acting job outside of the wizarding world. Suffice it to say, 2007 was a big year for her!

As you probably remember, in the 4th film Harry Potter comes face to face with Lord Voldemort. As a consequence, he is absolutely certain of his return, but the Ministry of Magic does everything within its power to keep people from believing his claims. In order to keep the rumors from getting out of hand, they send an employee of their own to teach in Hogwarts, and so we are introduced to the glorious Dolores Umbridge, one of the most despised characters in the series. She becomes the new Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, and decides to remove any practical training from from the program, leaving the students with nothing but theory. Displeased with this turn of events, Hermione and Ron convince Harry to teach his own classes for their select group of friends, to make sure they’d be able to defend themselves should they ever need to. They called themselves Dumbledore’s Army.

The first time we see Hermione on the Order of the Phoenix is shortly after Harry arrives to the Order’s headquarters, which takes place at the 12 Grimmauld Place. Relieved to see her best friend well after being attacked by Dementors, Hermione hurries into his arms to give him a hug. We get witness a quite hilarious scene featuring Crookshanks, Hermione’s cat, which happens when the trio plus Fred, George and Ginny Weasley try to eavesdrop an Order meeting by using extendable ears. Spotting the small ear near the floor, the orange cat quickly jumps on it, catching it with his mouth. Of course such action ended up ruining the little plan. We are first introduced to Luna Lovegood in this movie of the franchise, most specifically when Hermione, Neville, Ron and Harry are on their way to Hogwarts. Luna ends up sitting with them on the boat and Hermione is the one who starts by introducing her as Loony (a nickname given by students) before correcting herself.

We are introduced to Dolores Umbridge during the welcoming feast, and Hermione is the first to realize that the Ministry of Magic had decided to interfere at Hogwarts. With Umbridge quickly refusing to teach practical defense, Hermione encourages Harry to teach Hogwarts students Defence Against the Dark Arts in secret. Even though he initially refuses, Harry ends up saying yes and creates Dumbledore’s Army along with Hermione, Ron and many other familiar faces from the franchise. It is during the lessons that Hermione learns the Patronus Charm; hers taking the form of a otter. She also duels Ron, and of course, wins. Hermione is one of the few people who are brave enough to call Voldemort by his name and not by “He-Who-Must-NotBeNamed“.

It’s also in this movie that we are introduced to Gwamp, Hagrid’s giant half brother, who develops a strange bond with Hermione to say at least. He picks her up, and after she tells him in an authority tone to put her down, to which he obliges. Gwamp gives her the bycycle handlebar that has a bell– Which he enjoys the ringing of.

It is after their class took their O.W.L.S that Harry has a vision of Sirius Black being tortured by Voldemort. Worried that it was a trap by Voldemort, Hermione convinces Harry to try and contact Sirius before doing anything rash. She accompanies him into Umbridge’s office so he can use the Floo Network, with the assistance of Ron, Ginny and Luna. However, they get caught by Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad. When Umbridge threatens to use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry during questioning, Hermione makes up a lie that they had been working on Dumbledore’s weapon. Intrigued by the revelation, Umbridge tells Hermione to lead her to the place in question. She, along with Harry, lure Umbridge to the Forbidden Forest, where Umbridge ends up being carried away by a herd of centaurs after insulting and hurting one of them. This allowed Hermione and Harry to escape and meet up with Ron, Ginny, Luna, and Neville, who had escaped from the Inquisitorial Squad. After a debate over whether or not the others were going to travel with Harry to London, the six flew on Thestrals to Department of Mysteries to save Harry’s godfather.

Hermione’s fear turned to be true as Harry’s vision was only an illusion to get him to the Department of Mysteries to obtain a prophecy Voldemort sought. The six students were then surrounded by Death Eaters, among them, Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Hermione fights against the Death Eaters, stunning and knocking some out.

After defeating the Death Eaters with the Order, Hermione is last seen leaving Hogwarts after another year of school.

Deleted Scenes

While all scenes in Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix are fantastic, there are some that did made the final cut. Luckily for us, with the release of the movie in DVD, we got to see the clips that were deleted (and so can you by watching the video bellow)!

Did you know that…

  • While it’s not seen in the movie, in the book Hermione is still full on her activism on behalf of house-elves. While it’s not as intense as it is seen in the fourth year, Hermione learns how to knit socks and hats for the house-elves. She ends up hiding the clothing in the Gryffindor Tower, in hopes the elves would be happy to be freed. Her plan backfires, however, when the elves find the attempt to be insulting and stop cleaning the Gryffindor Tower. Dobby did enjoy the gifts left though, and took upon himself to clean the Gryffindor Tower, a fact Hermione did not know about.
  • Another thing that we learn in the books but don’t see in the movie is the moment when Hermione and Ron find out they have been appointed as prefects for Gryffindor house and receive badges. It is a position that Hermione takes very seriously.
