Colouring can give you extra oomph and it's just darn pretty! Hint: do not follow my instructions word for word - if you find something wrong, play around with the settings - no icon can ever be made the same.
Choose a picture and crop it down to 100x100. Crop tool highlighted by the red box, in the above picture.
If your picture is bright enough, skip this step. Duplicate your base (right click on base, "duplicate layer") and set the duplicate to screen, opacity 57%. Sharpen the screen layer and fade out ("shift" and "control" and "f") by 50%.
Brighter, eh? Now, duplicate (right click on layer, "duplicate layer") the screen layer and set to either "overlay" or "soft light" (see which one looks better). Seeing as you duplicated the screen layer, the opacity should be 57% as well.
Create a new layer ("shift" + "control" + "n") and set it above all the other layers. Fill this with #000033 (or a very dark blue - almost black) and set to "exclusion", 100% opacity (should already be done). Looks swanky, eh?
New layer again ("shift" + "control" + "n") and make sure it's above all the other layers and fill with #CCFFCC (or just a light green). Set to "colour burn" and reduce opacity to 67%. Colours should be deeper and have a greenish tinge.
Almost finished! Yep, you guessed it - new layer ("shift" + "control" + "n") and again, it has to be at the top. Fill with #FFCCFF at opacity 67% and set to "soft light". The whole image should be brighter.
Last one! Now, duplicate the base, bring it to the top of all the layers. Sharpen once and fade if you want. Set to soft light. TA DA! There you go! An easy and quick colouring tutorial. Have fun!
