April 28, 2009 - Emma Watson talks ‘Half Blood Prince’

This time, ‘Wizard’ talks with the actress portraying one of Harry’s partners in crime: Hermione Granger

EMMA WATSON TALKS ‘HALF-BLOOD PRINCE’”Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince” is the sixth venture through J.K. Rowling’s universe of witchcraft and wizardry. Initially scheduled for a November 2008 release, the film will finally be on the big screen this coming July. Directed by David Yates, who helmed the previous Potter film and who is currently shooting “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the movie finds the teenage wizards in a splintered world of increasing darkness. The stars of the film, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, each talked with Wizard about the making of “Half-Blood Prince,” the near decade they’ve spent as part of the franchise, and the plans they have for their post-Potter lives.

What is Hermione’s big moment and big sequence in the sixth film?
WATSON: There’s this mean girl called Lavender who has a bit of a crush on Ron. It’s leaked in the beginning of the film that Hermione and Ron are finally going to get it together, and then she steps in. Hermione is sensitive and quite mean, really. And it’s very much about how she sort of despises Lavender. Not really because she’s taken Ron away, but because she’s kind of the opposite of Hermione. So it’s very comic and also quite sad for her. It’s very Ron based, her part.

Do you think the fans of the book will find “Half-Blood Prince” to be a faithful adaptation?
WATSON: I hope so. I think we’ve stuck as close as we possibly can without making a ten-hour movie. We’ve never had that complaint before, and I personally am such a big fan of the books. I’ve read them each of them three or four times so I think that’s a really good focus for us.

When you look back at the making of this film, what do you think you might remember from it?
WATSON: What really stuck out for me was Ron’s Quidditch scene. It was so funny. Rupert’s comic timing is just brilliant and he’s so funny. There’s this great scene where Hermione and Lavender are fighting over Ron, and we had a bit of fun with that. With Dumbledore’s death scene it was absolutely freezing that night and it was a very sad scene, really.

What are the pros and the cons of having the same directors a couple times in a row versus having different directors coming in each time?
WATSON: It was a lot of fun having new directors because there was more energy and you knew there would be something new every time. But David [Yates] is a very good director and I think he’s done a really good job with it. When you get to know someone you can trust them, and it gave him more a chance to try different things out.

At the very first press junket for the film, David Haymen and Chris Columbus [”Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s” producer and director, respectively] both said they looked high and low for kids they thought could handle both acting in the film and the fame that would come along with it. How confident were you that you could handle all that? And how different a ride has it been versus what was in your head almost ten years ago?
WATSON: The funny thing is I never realized that I was going to be famous. It never really occurred to me. I was just auditioning for parts and I just loved the character so much. I felt that I knew how to play her and I could be her, and Chris Columbus gave me a lot of confidence. And the fame thing never really hit home, it never did. When you’re doing a movie you’re kind of in a bubble and you don’t really realize the impact it’s having on the rest of the world. It comes in these surreal moments, like a premiere or a film coming out, and I realized that I am famous, but most of the time I forget.

If you continue acting after “Harry Potter” is done do you think you’re going to look for roles that are as far from Hermione as possible?
WATSON: I would like to play someone a bit different, yes. But I’m not going to go play a thug just to get away from Hermione. It will be really interesting if I find anything I feel as strongly about as I felt towards Hermione. I just felt like I had to play the role. It’s very hard to explain, I just felt I had to do it, and I haven’t read another script that I’ve felt that way about.

‘Harry Potter’ Stars Get ‘Benjamin Button’ Treatment

The stars of Harry Potter are getting a makeover from the team behind Brad Pitt’s transformation for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button — they’re set to be digitally aged for the final movie.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are currently filming for the last two-part movie of the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The epilogue of the J.K. Rowling novel takes place 19 years in the future, when their characters are in their thirties.

But instead of casting older actors to play them, movie bosses are using digital technology to age them — the same technique used in Pitt’s hit film.

Producer David Heyman says, “We were looking at different ways of doing it, other actors and so on. And then we saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and that aging technology, so I think we’ll try that because I’d feel terrible about having other people take those parts at the last gasp.”

However, Radcliffe is worried about the aging process — insisting he’d rather another actor portray an older Harry Potter rather than risk it going wrong.

He says, “If it’s good I’ll be really pleased but I’m just nervous about the idea. If it’s not good and that’s what people are left with, that would be awful.

“If it came to a choice between having me, Emma and Rupert looking a bit stupid and it being slightly comical or having other actors play us, I would go for the other actors every time.”

But he’s adamant that he and his other co-stars will do their best to cast their magic in the scenes.

Radcliffe adds, “Having now seen Benjamin Button, I know that it can be done and it’s going to be up to me, Rupert and Emma to look older and try to get that.”

Harry Potter Trio to Age Using Benjamin Button Technique

What will Daniel Radcliffe look like in his 30s? You’ll soon find out.

Radcliffe and his Harry Potter costars, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, will be digitally aged for the franchise’s final film using the same technology employed in the reverse-aging Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hollywood.com reports.

“[W]e saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and that aging technology, so I think we’ll try that because I’d feel terrible about having other people take those parts at the last gasp,” says producer David Heyman.

The epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows takes place 19 years in the future, putting the characters in their mid-30s.

Though aware the transformation can be done, Radcliffe, 19, says he’s wary about the idea and would prefer to have another actor play older Harry.

“If it’s not good and that’s what people are left with, that would be awful,” he says. “If it came to a choice between having me, Emma and Rupert looking a bit stupid and it being slightly comical or having other actors play us, I would go for the other actors every time.”

Split into two features, the second part of Hallows will hit theaters in July 2011. The sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, opens July 15.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson tells of sadness at end of final movie

Emma Watson has spoken of her sadness as the end of filming on the final Harry Potter movie draws near and of her new life as a model for Burberry.

The 19-year-old, who stars as magic-wand-waving Hermione Granger in the film versions of the J K Rowling books, said she was “ready to go and do other things”.

But she admitted that when filming finishes: “I will be . . . uncontrollable. It’s been half of our lives. It’s made us, it’s formed us. It’s such a big part of my life, so it will be really sad –and so much of the crew who have been there since the beginning are like my family.”

She is already enjoying a different kind of life in front of the camera, having already been photographed for a forthcoming fashion advertising campaign after securing a six-figure deal from Burberry.

The actress has also been photographed by legendary Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld for French magazine, Crash.

She told Interview magazine’s Derek Blasberg: “I’d met Karl a few times before, at parties or something where we really couldn’t talk. But this was a dream come true.”

Speaking about her role as Hermione, she said: “I loved the books–I was a massive fan. I just felt like that part belonged to me. I know that sounds crazy, but from that first audition, I always knew. At the beginning, they were casting the other characters as well – but I always knew I was going out for Hermione. She came so naturally to me. Maybe so much of myself at the time was similar to her.”

Watson, who was born in Paris, said she would be sad to say goodbye to her fellow cast members, but added: “We will always be very important to each other. But, at the same time, after eight Harry Potter films, we’ll be ready to go and do other things, and be other people, and have time for ourselves.”

Filming in London will soon finish for The Deathly Hallows, JK Rowling’s last book in her best-selling series. It will be screened in two parts, the first of which will be released in 2010 and the second out in 2011. The prequel, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, will be released in the UK on 15 July.

Among those seen at recent filming sessions on location in London are three lookalike stand-ins for Watson and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, 19, and Rupert Grint, 20.

Their duties included helping to rehearse and set up shots while the real actors were on breaks.

The cast and crew have spent several days on location in Piccadilly Circus late at night filming what fans will recognise as the ‘café attack’ scene. The scene in the book originally takes place in Tottenham Court Road, but producers may have relocated it to Piccadilly Circus to give it a more scenic backdrop.

April 22, 2009 - Emma Watson Predicted RPattz’ Superstardom, Talks ‘Twilight’

While “Twilight” actresses Kristen Stewart, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene and others recently made their own career breakthroughs, such fan madness is old-hat for Emma Watson. Which is all the more amazing when you consider that the world-famous actress otherwise known as Hermione Granger is still only 18 years old.

Recently, we caught up with the sweet-smiling superstar her eagerness to watch “Half-Blood Prince,” and whether she’d ever bare all for a role a la Daniel Radcliffe. And naturally, we had to ask the star of this generation’s first book-to-film teen blockbuster series what she thought about the “Twilight” phenomenon.

“I don’t know much [about it],” she admitted. “I haven’t seen the film.”

Nevertheless, Watson said she was thrilled to see her hunky “Goblet of Fire” and “Order of the Phoenix” co-star graduate to become one of Hollywood’s most promising young leading men since, well, Daniel Radcliffe. “Obviously, I know Rob,” she explained. “I’m just gob-smacked by the level of excitement and hype around ‘Twilight.’ I’m very happy for Rob that it’s been so successful.”

And although RPattz likes to play up his shock and confusion over all those shrieking, Sharpie-waving fans, Emma insisted that she knew all along that he’d someday become like the Beatles all rolled into one. “Of course I did; he is incredibly handsome!” she grinned. “He is a very, very handsome man, so I’m not too surprised.”
