With Harry Potter drawing near its apocalyptic finale, Empire joins the three stars ats they contemplate their final farewells to Harry, Hermione, Ron - and Hogwarts.

But freedom wasn’t always easily won. Emma Watson’s Hermione escapes the family worries that plague her friend Ron in the film - but she does so at a huge cost. “The film opens with Hermione wiping her parents’ memories [of her] and leaving their house. You don’t read that in the book; you just know she does it. That’s a scene that Steve (Kloves) and Dave (Yates) wrote for the film, which I was happy about because you see the sacrifice that Hermione and Ron make to be Harry’s friend. You see Ron’s home and Harry’s. But you never really get a sense of Hermione’s life outside Hogwarts, outside that friendship, and it’s important. She’s not just going off to school for another year. You’re choosing between family and friends; it’s pretty brutal. They offer her a cup of tea, completely unaware that anything’s about to happen, and then I cast a spell that wipes their memories of me. There’re photos all around the room, actual childhood pictures of me, and they just dissolve. It’s horrible. And then I have to shut the door and walk out alone.”

Despite showing no more inclination for the limelight than her male co-stars, Watson is most hounded by the tabloids. So famous that her haircuts are front-page news, she seems almost relieved to be in the odd bubble of Leavesden Studios, and has chosen to go to university in the US, at the relatively quiet Brown (”Brown is a small campus so everyone is used to seeing me around. No one takes a second glance anymore, which is wonderful.”) For Watson, it wasn’t the length of the shoot or the prospect of finishing that was most draining, but the sheer scale and content of this film.

“The emotional stuff is much harder. These two films have been on a completely different level in terms of what they’ve demanded from me physically and emotionally. I did a scene where Ron’s had half his body splinches (the result of an unsuccessful disapparition), and he’s drenched in blood and my hands are covered in blood and my friend’s in a huge amount of pain in my arms, I’m trying to save him. I also got tortured; I’ve never had to do a torture scene before. And then physically … there were huge amounts of physical exertion for, like, days on end, you know, working with explosives because there are so many fighting scenes. When the spells go off, they have tonnes of pyrotechnics and it’s scary. No acting required; it’s absolutely terrifying. I felt like I was in the army. So yeah, it was a very, very demanding shoot.”

Not that anyone wants to ask her about that. Watson, who’s Hermione-like levels of academic overachievement continue at Brown (where she’s been acting in a Chekhov play), has found on this film that journalists are only interested in one thing: what it was like kissing Ron. “I supposed I understand. This kiss between Ron and Hermione is highly anticipated, it’s been building up for eight films now. And Harry Potter, it’s not Twilight, you know; we’re not selling sex. So, whenever there is a hint of that, everybody gets terribly excited. In fact, it was horribly awkward; we couldn’t stop laughing. The nicest thing about it was, before we did it, we turned to each other and were like, ‘God, this is going to be awful, isn’t it?’ But hopefully it will look good.”

Despires the dashes full-tilt through forests and glens (”It was quite competetive; the camera was on a zip wire and we were sort of racing each other”) and the stuntwork (”When they set up these pyrotechnics there’s a huge pressure to get it right”), Watson’s biggested disaster on set occured when she tried to document this last instalment of the franchise.

“I wandered into a second-hand camera shop, and this very nice gentlement persuaded me I needed an old-black-and-white film camera. I realised I hadn’t taken any photos for the last ten years, so this time I’ve been bugging everyone. Takes me about ten minutes to take one because I have to work out the aperture, the shutter speed, the focus and everything. But the girl who was helping me develop the film accidently turned on the lights in the dark room and wiped everything. I couldn’t talk for about three days. I was devastated. Forget the arty cool effect of using old film caeras. It’s absolutely bollocks. Digial cameras and Photoshop is the way to go.”

Baby, look at her now! With Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince hitting Sky Movies Premiere / HD on October 22, “Sky Movies Magazine” chats exclusively to feist female wizard Emma Watson and, over the page, her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, about growing up in the spotlight, the perks of fame and what comes next …

Hermione is “the ultimate girl”, according to the woman who plays her.

Emma Watson’s come a long way since she first popped up on cinema screens as Harry Potter’s angelic (albeit precocious) school chum in 2001. With six record-breaking “Potter” films including October’s Sky Movies premiere “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prine” under her belt and the final duo, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2″ opening in November this year and July next year respectively, the 20-year-old Watson has been ferociously productive. You’d expect her to hae time for nothing more than wand-waving.

But you’d be wrong; while Hermione Granger is without a doubt the brains of the trio, she’s by no means the only one with smarts. Hard-working Emma’s gone from “Potter” to A-Level success and is now studying at Brown University in the U.S.

If that wsn’t enough, she’s become quite a fashion icon. Gone is the gawky teen and, in her place, a sophisticated young woman rarely abesen from the catwalk front rows. She’s even tried her hand at modelling, picking up a contract for fashion line Burberry.

Today, Watson is back modelling the Hermione Granger: Outdoors collection. As security keep a careful eye out for tabloid snappers, we catch up with her and the rest of the “Potter” cast on a freezing day of filming in Burham Beeches.

Taking a break from the lends and the endless carpet of fake snow for a chat and the chance to duck into the warmth, Watson is as easy to talk to as she is serious about what she does. What’s clear is that she’s loved every minute of the journey so far but, with so many options in fron of her - acting, fashion, academia - the starlet is undecided about where her future will take her …

Do you feel like you’re at the end of a journey?
I feel really pressured because I feel like this is my last go, my last shot. I don’t want to have any regrets. I want it to be the best performance I’ve ever given. I want to know that I’ve done the best that I can possibly do. It’s really strange.

Are you thinking about what you’re going to do after?
I really think I need to recharge my batteries and go and be me for a bit.

Will you carry on acting?
I really don’t know. I think I need to find some real belief in myself away from this. I know I can player Hermione, but I don’t know … we’ll see.

When did you find time to study?
It’s something I really wanted for myself. If you want something enough, you make time to do it. I’d do most of my reading when I was sat in the make-up truck. I’d sti and write and I’d have my laptop on my lap and I worked weekends. It was exhausting. But it’s so worth it, I’m so proud.

What were the challenges involved in making “Half Blood Prince”?
There’s a lote more to do with the relationshp between Hermione and Ron. Hermione got very serious in the last couple of films so it was really nice to get to do some funny bits with Rupert and he’s great at that. Hermione’s the ones who does all the thinking and planning. Sometimes I look at her and think, I can’t believe she doesn’t just collapse … You must be so bored of hearing us say, “They’re getting darker,” but it is going that way!

Do you have a favourite scene?
The Quidditch scene with Ron. I couldn’t believe how funny it was, he just killed me. I couldn’t stop laughing. Having said that, it was my favourite to film - it was one of the coldest days of the year and we were out there for hours!

How do you think you’ve changed over the course of the series?
I’ve changed a lot in some ways and not a lot in others. I’ve gone from the age of nine to 20, so that’s 10 years. I guess I’ve become a lot more comfortable with filmmaking. It was all so new to me but now it’s just second nature. It’s got to the point where I am able to be much more creative with it. I know the character like the back of my hand.

Do you always keep the “Harry Potter” books close at hand?
Yeah, I love [Rowling]’s work. I’ve always loved the books. I’m the first person to say, “This is not as good as it’s written in the book.” I’ll be the one saying, “This line’s much better, it’s in the book!”

Do you have a favourite?
I love the third one. I just remember my dad reading it to me and I loved it. It’s also my favourite film and it was a great part for Hermione. I had a part that I could really get my teeth into. I like the tomboy aspect of Hermione, that she was part of the action.

What do you like about Hermione?
She’s got a heard of gold. She’s the first person to sympathise with anyone in opposition to her. She’s so determined, loyal and she’s such a strong girl … woman! She’s the ultimate girl.

How have you coped with being in the public eye?
I used to live in Oxford, but now I live in London so that I can be closer to the film sets. The commute was just crazy. Since moving to London I’m starting to feel that tension when I walk out of my door. “Harry Potter” has such a high level of interest, anything - even if it’s nothing - is news.

Did you think it would be this big?
Even if producer David Heyman has known, how do you explain that to a nine year old? I was so naive. the first time someone asked me to sign a book I thought it was the weirded thing ever.

Which of the big famous actors have you bonded with the most?
I found that a lot of actors are involved in art - something I love and I did for A-Level. I ended up talking to Alan Rickman because he went to art school, so did Robbie Coltrance and Chris Columbus and Judi Dench. And I really got on with Emma Thompson. I also loved hoe she was so down to earth, so normal and so kind, and she doesn’t ignore anyone and pays attention to everyone from the sound guy to the director. I really loved her to bits. Maggie [Smith] is an absolute sweetie. She sends me chocolates and a note at Christmas.

What about J.K. Rowling?
She has more imput in the films now that she’s stopped writing the books, but she’s so busy. She’s got a family and she’s writing and everything. She’s more involved now, which is really nice and whenever I see her I get on really well with her. She’s really funny - very, very witty.

Is she much like Hermione?
Definitely. You can see it. She’s so clever!

Following my summer collection for People Tree, I wanted to visit Bangladesh with Safia to see the difference Fair Trade makes.

The contrast between the slums in Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) where the people who work in the garment factories live and Swallows (the Fair Trade community supported by People Tree) was all too apparent.

You can read a short interview of my thoughts on the trip below, but I still find it hard to convey what Fair Trade means to those producing our fashion - it’s just so impressive to see how the women have used Fair Trade clothing to escape poverty and empower themselves and their children. I was very moved and inspired.

Although I wasn’t centrally involved in the design of this collection, I had great fun in helping Safia select some gorgeous Fair Trade textiles - a dogtooth hand woven check, cable knits, soft organic jerseys and the first Fair Trade hand woven brushed checked fabric which has been made into easy tulip skirts, dresses and shirts.

There are even a few party dresses, such as the little black satin tulip dress which can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion! I have picked out some of my favourite pieces which I have modelled for People Tree.

I want to congratulate People Tree on this new range and really hope people continue to buy these clothes and to support their great work in the promotion of Fair Trade.

Love Emma xx

Safia Minney interviews Emma: Watson as they visit the women at Swallows, one of People Tree’s Fair Trade partners in Bangladesh.

Safia: What has been your experience of Bangladesh?
Emma: I wasn’t sure what to expect when we arrived in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. I was expecting it to ber very busy, and hot, but the first thing that really struck me was the noise, and the traffic!

Our journey from the airpoort was unlike anything I have ever experienced: no one sticks to the lanes; everyone constantly beeps their horns and generally ignores traffic lights! Soon after arriving we visited the slums in Dhaka where the garment factory workers live.

Again, I had some preconceived ideas but nothing prepared me for the reality. It was upsetting to see the conditions in which these people live, but I was incredibly moved by their spirit and friendliness in spite of such apparent adversity.

Safia: I guess one of the reasons why these workers in Bangladesh have been protesting for a living wage is because of their appalling living conditions in the slumns. Can you describe what facilities people have there?

Emma: Facilities? There are no facilities there to speak of. In the building we visited, I saw one shower, one cleaning place and one hole in the floor which was the toilet. This was for the whole floor.

That floor had maybe eight or nine rooms coming off it, and each room housed a whole family, that is 32 people to one toilet.

Safia: Their minimum wage is 1,62 taka - so that’s about £6 per week. They’re campaigning for around three times that much.

Emma: Even though the cost of living is much less in Bangladesh than the UK, £6 a week is appaling, especially considering the hours that they are working. They seem to work around the clock and still do not have enough money to buy food to feeed their family, or live any kind of life at all.

I really do hope that they achieve their goal of £18 a week. If they can, it would be life changing for them.

Safia: You then went on to meet Amin Amirul, president of the national Garment Workers Federation which People Tree has been supporting for over 10 years.

Emma: It was an honour to meet Amin. Seeing his office and what he does with so little, I felt like it was him against the world. What he tries to achieve just seems so enormous. He is so determined and he is not going to give up until the lives of the garment factory workers have been improved. He was a very compelling speaker.

Safia: You also visited Swallows, the women’s project in Thanapara, Bangladesh and one of our producers to see some of the work we are doing and to see the difference Fair Trade makes.

At Swallows we work to employ as many women as possible so that they can support their families and build a healthy community. What was it like seeing all those different processes of making clothes by hand?

Emma: I always find it difficult to impress on people what ‘handmade’ really means. To make a simple garment they have to produce the yarn, hand-dye the yarn, get it onto the loom, then weave the fabric, cut it to the pattern, sew it into the garment and then embroider it - all by hand.

It is so hard for people to imagine what it takes to create something and how special that item of clothing is.

Safia: What would you say to people who are like ‘we’re in the 21st century so why make it by hand today - why not make it by machine?’

Emma: Having seen the slums in Dhaka and the conditions in which these people live and work to produce ‘fast fashion’, I would say to those people that this is not the way we should be making clothes in the modern world.

These workers have no rights and work every hour of the day just to feed their families. Fair Trade gives families the option to stay together, rather than one or both parents having to move to cities, and they are paid a fair wage. It empowers people and doesn’t take away their dignity.

Safia: Can you imagine yourself, born to a Bangladesh family and working in a garment factory?

Emma: I cannot imagine how I would have the mental ability and strength to go into the garment factories in the slums everyday and have my children living six hundred miles away.

We interviewed a woman in the slum in Dhaka. She was very candid about the fact that there just 6 wasn’t any hope for her. There is no hope for anyone living in those conditions and being paid that kind of wage. Coming to Swallows I see that there is an alternative.
The living conditions are modest but it’s clean and there is a real sense of community, their families are together and they seem to love and be proud of what they are doing - many things that we in the West take for granted.

Swallows is special and I need to believe for my own peace of mind that there will be more places like this in the developing countries in the world.

Safia: People Tree does work with 50 other producer groups in Bangladesh, India, Kenya, and Peru that are making that difference. What kind of message do you want to bring to people your age now you have seen it?

Emma: I don’t know how to impress upon people the importance of Fair Trade. It is so hard to get people to care and to realise what a huge difference Fair Trade can make to someone’s life.

If, when buying an item, whatever it may be, people have the choice to buy Fair Trade or non Fair Trade, they should buy the Fair Trade item. It really does make all the difference - the contrast between Swallows and the slums in Dhaka is testimony to that.

Safia: You’ve looked at different areas of Swallows’ production, but as well as that you’ve seen the Swallows’ day care centre for 60 children, from about 3 months to 5 years old. Then from 5 until 12 there is the school for 300 children. And it’s not just for the children of the women who work here but also for children in the wider community.

Emma: It’s fantastic what you’ve been able to do. Not only do these women have jobs, but they’re earning the same amount as men - there is gender equality, they are empowered. They’re able to support and look after themselves, and live in dignity.

Then there is the fact that you’re running this day care centre, and also a domestic violence program for the women who are being abused at than giving to charity, I think, as you’re essentially giving these people the opportunity to help themselves out of poverty and that’s all they really want.

I’ve been given a lot in my life and I have had so many fantastic opportunities. It’s really important to me that I try to give something back. I wanted to find the right thing and working with People Tree is so special and rewarding and the best way I can do that at the moment. I really believe in Fair Trade and I just want to see more of it in the world. I need to know there are more places like Swallows.

An ex-child star that makes an enormous fortune and that lives through the ups and downs that only international fame can offer, she could have become a Lindsay Lohan. But there is no way that the actress from the Harry Potter series, Emma Watson, will turn into another Hollywood cliché.

This girl of 20 years, who since the age of 11 has been under the limelight thanks to her bossy and know-it-all character Hermione Granger, has her feet firmly on the ground. “Maybe too much so,” she confesses.

LUCKY GIRL
Perhaps she won’t have to worry about her finances for the rest of her life, as she has millions of dollars, but Emma strives to be a normal teenager like the rest of her friends.

“It may sound strange, but I just want to be with my friends, and they don’t have these amounts of money to spend. I want to do what they do, so if they go to the movies, so do I. I try to live a normal life, even though it’s not always easy. The fact that I attend university and have a close family has kept me grounded,” she admits, but adds that she feels overwhelmed by her financial success.

“I have so much money that I don’t know what to do with it. I bought a laptop and a Toyota Prius, but that’s probably the most expensive thing that I’ve purchased.” So great is her burden that she has registered in a four-day course to learn how to manage her finances.

Emma isn’t completely sure if she wants to be an actress for her whole life. As a result, she hesitated before agreeing to take part in the last films of the Harry Potter series: the Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows. “Honestly, I’m surprised by what my life has become. There are moments when I just don’t understand how all of this has happened to me. I have never been sure that this is what I wanted to do, especially when I compared myself to Dan (Radcliffe) and Rupert (Grint). Maybe it was because I was nine when they gave me the role, without ever having been to an acting school. I didn’t know that I wanted to be an actress, they just discovered me out of nowhere. And that it happened to me doesn’t mean that it was right for me. It took me a while to realize that this is what I want to do…for now.”

And it’s understandable. In her family there are only lawyers and academics. “We never watched films at home and I had no idea who Maggie Smith or Gary Oldman were. I’m still learning: I watch a lot of movies and I’ve become passionate about film. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll be an actress forever.”

IN SEARCH OF OPTIONS
Currently, Emma studies English at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Following in the footsteps of actresses like Jodie Foster and Natalie Portman, she recognizes the importance of continuing her education.

“I would be absolutely crazy if I hadn’t returned to school, because I think it keeps me in contact with reality. And you can’t be a good actress if you’re crazy!” she says, laughing.

When you achieve success, you lose anonymity. And in spite of the fact that she has lived half of her life as a role model, Emma is still not used to it. “I still take the metro. The people look at me and say to each other: ‘Is that the girl from Harry Potter? No, it can’t be, because she’s using public transport.”

EMMA AND BOYS
The star takes advantage of our meeting to clear up some rumours about her public image. “I’m not the new face of Chanel perfumes. When I hear these rumours I get sad because I would love it to be true, trust me.”

Another thing that she wishes to clear up is her reputation as a serial monogamist, which Emma insists is complete nonsense. “The only way to deal with that is to not pay any attention to it.”

For this young actress, fame and fortune can be an obstacle when it comes to finding a boyfriend. “People tend to think I have a long line of boys waiting to go out with me, but it’s not true because they feel a little intimidated. That’s a situation that stresses me out quite a bit.”

Emma Watson, Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof all battled it out to be the style queen of the 2010 festival yesterday.

The trio all arrived at the event in Somerset wearing similar outfits of tiny hotpants and boots.

While Watson opted for a khaki-print Louis Vuitton corset, denim shorts and spiked wellies, Moss, 36, went for denim hotpants, fishnet tights, a black vest top and a wax jacket - the most-desired festival fashion item du jour.

Model and musician Craig, 19, was first spotted with the actress when they saw the London production of War Horse earlier this month.

Writing on his Twitter at the time, he said: ‘Heading to London this afternoon, going to the theatre tonight with a wonderful lady.’

Clearly enjoying the atmosphere at Pilton farm, Emma sat backstage and allowed a friend to apply a fake tattoo.

The transfer said ‘mother lover’ with a picture of two birds around it.

ONLY days after she finished filming the final Harry Potter movie, EMMA WATSON’s got herself a tattoo and is out partying with her rock-star bloke.

Emma made her Glasto debut as a fully-fledged rock chick, or should that be rock chic, yesterday.

And her look was a far cry from the goody-goody Hermione Granger character she played in the JK Rowling films.

Wearing a tiny corset and denim shorts, she wand-ered around with George (trying to go incognito with his hair slicked back) in tow.

She said: “I’ve just arrived and I’m blown away by the size of the festival. We only finished filming last week so I’m still trying to get my head round it.

“I’m here to enjoy myself and plan to see lots of bands.”

And in true rock ‘n’ roll style the actress even got a cool tattoo to emphasise her new wildchild style.

But Emma’s parents need not fret - it was a temporary one from charity WaterAid, which helps poor countries get access to clean supplies.

I’ve got a lot of time for the new rock ‘n’ roll Emma, who met George when they appeared in a photoshoot for Burberry.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows is such an epic film that part one comes out later this year and part two in 2011 - no wonder she needs to let off steam.

I just hope Emma doesn’t spend too much of the weekend in a muggled state after too many butterbeers.

Daniel said: “It’s going to be bizarre. I’m going to be devastated. It’s going to be very, very sad because it’s been such an important part of my life.”

They are currently filming the final scenes of the last movie in London.

Emma said: “There will be a huge hole in my heart when it’s over.

“I’m just so unbelievably proud to have been part of this. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

It’s been 10 years since the stars got together to start filming the first Harry Potter.

The films are the most successful series ever, making nearly £4 billion worldwide already.
